The Musical World of Rocky Horror

Timbiriche is a Mexican pop group that first debuted on April 30th, 1982 composed of six children, most of whose parents were famous Mexican actors, singers, and composers. They released their first two albums ("Timbiriche" and "La Banda Timbiriche") in 1982 with great success, selling over four hundred thousand copies of each album. In 1983 they released their third album "La Banda Timbiriche: En Concierto". Three of the tracks for this album were cover versions of songs from Spanish language musicals previously translated and produced by Julissa, mother of Timbiriche band member Benny Ibarra Jr. One of these songs was Baile Del Sapo, a version of The Time Warp created for Julissa's 1976 production of El Show De Terror De Rocky. Timbiriche went on to have many years of success, though with numerous line-up changes (Benny Ibarra Jr. left the group in 1985). Their popularity would peak around 1987-1988 when their albums sold two to four million copies each in Mexico. Timbiriche would finally disband in 1992, by which point only one original band member was left. In 1998 the original group of Timbiriche band members would reunite for a few extremely well received tour dates, which would then lead to a national tour with a live recording of Baile del Sapo on their 1999 Timbiriche: El Concierto double live album. They've since reunited again (minus one member, Paulina Rubio) for their 25th Anniversary, with a "Timbiriche 25" tour and associated recordings in 2007-2008.

Baile Del Sapo was in turn covered by RBD, who were simultaneously a Mexican pop group and a telenovela ("Rebelde", 2004-2006). In the television series a group of high school students form a pop band, which also happens to be a pop band in real life as well (shades of Miley Cyrus!). In July 2005 they released their second album "Tour Generación RBD En Vivo" on both CD and DVD, documenting one of their sold out live performances at the Palacio de los Deportes (seating 23,000 people) in Mexico City. Two medleys of cover songs were performed, with the first medley featuring four songs recorded by Timbiriche including... Baile Del Sapo! It should be noted that RBD was specifically covering Timibiriche's performance of the song, so at this point it's actually twice removed from Julissa's original production of El Show De Terror De Rocky.
