Richard O'Brien - Horror Aid with Richard O'Brien (1988-01-08): 17 sound files        9,234 views

This "Horror Aid" charity event took place on January 8th, 1988 at King's Hall in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England. The night started off with a showing of Little Shop of Horrors, then had Damian sing three songs (including two versions of The Time Warp), followed this up with a showing The Rocky Horror Picture Show itself, and finally brought Richard O'Brien out to sing an assortment of songs. There are tracks of his from Shock Treatment, Disgracefully Yours, and The Stripper as well as a couple of songs I've never encountered before. The audio quality of this audience recording is unfortunately not very good, and apparently something happened to the PA during Damian's third song that made things even worse. Consequently it can be pretty difficult to hear Richard O'Brien, either speaking or with his acoustic guitar. All sound files taken from DIME.

  1. Time Warp by Damian - 6:15, 262 kbps MP3, 11.7 MB (35.6 MB lossless FLAC also available). Includes various announcements beforehand, and there are a number of audience hecklers ("Who's the wanker in the tights?") towards the beginning of the song.
  2. Sounds So Fine by Damian - 4:25, 258 kbps MP3, 8.1 MB (25.1 MB lossless FLAC also available). "Cheap, nasty disco music". Random.
  3. Time Warp II by Damian - 6:31, 270 kbps MP3, 12.6 MB (38.2 MB lossless FLAC also available). "Lots of people have said I've gone commercial with The Time Warp II. But I had to to get radio play!". Apparently this is the radio version, which was #44 on the singles charts at the time. At some point during the song something happened to the PA which caused it to vibrate horribly. Rather than fixing it, they just turned the volume down or unplugged the offending speaker.
  4. Announcements by Announcer - 3:13, 246 kbps MP3, 5.7 MB (17.5 MB lossless FLAC also available). Various boring announcements (at least that's what the audience keeps saying), prior to the Rocky Horror Picture Show screening.
  5. Introduction - 3:05, 250 kbps MP3, 5.5 MB (16.9 MB lossless FLAC also available). It's very difficult to hear Richard's introductory comments, between the loud crowd and the quiet sound system.
  6. Superheroes - 2:27, 237 kbps MP3, 4.1 MB (12.8 MB lossless FLAC also available). "Kill the sound engineer!". Apparently the audience was also unhappy with the sound system. Richard sang this immediately following the Rocky Horror Picture Show screening, since it was a non-Superheroes print.
  7. Shock Treatment - 1:53, 260 kbps MP3, 3.5 MB (10.6 MB lossless FLAC also available). From the 1981 film.
  8. King of Mediocrity Speech - 1:00, 247 kbps MP3, 1.8 MB (5.5 MB lossless FLAC also available). "Isn't it amazing that such mediocrity can bring you fame?" ... "On my death bed, I thought you know they'd say 'He was the King of Mediocrity'."
  9. Feminist at Heart - 2:45, 251 kbps MP3, 4.9 MB (15.1 MB lossless FLAC also available). "A new song I've written". I've never come across it elsewhere.
  10. Jazz Speech - 1:01, 239 kbps MP3, 1.7 MB (5.4 MB lossless FLAC also available). "Does anybody here like Jazz?"
  11. Rhythm of the Heartbeat - 4:27, 237 kbps MP3, 7.6 MB (23.5 MB lossless FLAC also available). This song would later appear in his Disgracefully Yours stage show, which Richard played in the character of Mephistopheles Smith.
  12. Deadpan Dolores - 1:49, 260 kbps MP3, 3.4 MB (10.3 MB lossless FLAC also available). From his 1982 stage musical, The Stripper.
  13. Man of Steel - 2:02, 259 kbps MP3, 3.8 MB (11.5 MB lossless FLAC also available). From his 1982 stage musical, The Stripper.
  14. Little Black Dress - 1:44, 252 kbps MP3, 3.1 MB (9.6 MB lossless FLAC also available). From the 1981 film Shock Treatment.
  15. Audience Q&A - 2:37, 241 kbps MP3, 4.5 MB (13.9 MB lossless FLAC also available)
  16. You're Just A Cousin Of Mine - 2:31, 246 kbps MP3, 4.4 MB (13.7 MB lossless FLAC also available). "Here's a song about incest ... The family that lays together stays together". Another Richard song I've never come across elsewhere.
  17. Closing - 1:14, 247 kbps MP3, 2.2 MB (6.6 MB lossless FLAC also available)
