I actually went to Billy Joe's and even performed Riff Raff there once, a long time ago. I was in the Nebraska/Iowa area for Ruth Fink-Winter and Wally Barsell's wedding. Billy Joe's is to this day the only Rocky theater I've ever seen with an audience that was actively hostile towards the cast. The audience would have been genuinely happier if there had been no cast at all (which I think is actually the case now). I'm still not sure how that sort of culture sprung up there. Though I am glad that they've been able to keep Rocky going up there as long as they have, without a cast.

This may sound blasphemous but as an ex-RHPS cast member, I think that I'd have enjoyed the show a lot more without the cast. I was always thinking they were in the way of the movie and I never watched nor cared about the casts unless I was playing a part that night. I was always there for the movie, the people, and having fun. Casts bring that experience down with cast politics, rules, etc. I'd love to have been a part or seen RHPS the first few years in it's genesis as there were no casts then, just AP which was always my favorite part.

They should take lessons from a theatre running the show like that. You can't hear a word of the movie these days and everyone is so damn eager to yell over everyone else that it makes the AP strained, forced, and incoherent.

All the show needs is an MC and maybe some others to hand out goodies like props posters, buttons and the like. Maybe some contests.

I've never seen people come to see a cast other than other cast members. Most people interested in Rocky are only there for the film and the AP experience and not to see a cast do exactly as they are doing on the screen.

just my thoughts

ROFL. That's a sweeping statement. People go to Rocky for a wide variety of reasons. Whenever I'm going on a road trip to Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, etc. it's certainly because I want to see the cast there. There wouldn't be much point in driving three hours each way if I just wanted to yell lines in a different theater.

You say you were there for "the people", and what is the cast but the backbone of "the people" at most theaters? Generally speaking (and Billy Joe's is an obvious exception here) if there were no cast, then there would not be a critical mass of people and the show would die. I've seen this happen multiple times when a cast disintegrated for whatever reason, and not long afterward the theatre would stop showing Rocky at all since the audience disappeared with them.

That's obviously going to depend a LOT on the specific cast. I've seen shows that emphasized T&A above all things, and shows that were obviously just a group of friends fucking around who didn't really care about the audience at all (an easy way to tell this is when the "show" is mostly just a long series of inside jokes). If I'm visiting Houston, I have two different casts to choose from. One is going to lean more towards the screen accuracy side of things, while the other is going to lean more toward the 'Hey check out this girl's tits!' side. I've enjoyed both at different times.

That's one of the more frequent complaints from people that saw Rocky Horror back in its heyday, and are now taking their kids to see it. "It's nothing like it used to be!", they cry. "Everyone's yelling something different!". And that's certainly true. Rocky Horror Show stage performances have to struggle with this issue as well.

But what are you going to do about it? Tell the people yelling the 'wrong' lines to shut up? Inform the audience that only previously approved line callers should shout anything? Hand out scripts with the accepted local lines? Sure, if call lines are yelled in scripted unison then it would probably be a better experience for virgins. But the show as a whole would obviously lose out on the creative chaos aspect of Rocky Horror.

I know I know I was just speaking for myself and a few others.

All your responses are true somewhat I suppose but it's just how I'd love to enjoy it.

I'm pretty unusual I guess in my tastes.

By th epeople I meant the audience. Whenever I did perform the only time I ever really got reactions from audience members was when I played Columbie a couple times and Frank a few times. I think if a certain cast emember puts a little Chrarcter into the character and just has an overall presence instead of just imitiating the character on screen then watchign the cast can be enjoyable but mostly I just watch the movie and shout whatever and laugh with friends. I honestly could care less about what the cast is doing.

Agreed, most theatres do need the presence of a cast to keep the film going, but it would just be nice to not have to deal with all that cast crap.
Especially the california ones. Which at one show they didn't start until almost 2am and when they did start they did 3 or 4 pre-shows that had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH RHPS and it was a little tiresome that the actual movie didn't start until after 2am.

It's a bit rediculous.

You've just described what separates the really good RHPS performers from both the bad and the merely adequate performers, overall. While performing, you're actually competing with the movie for attention to an extent. If you don't have sufficient stage presence, then audience attention will go right back to the movie. Different people accomplish this in different ways.

I'll certainly agree with that. Some casts really drag pre-show out to a ridiculous extent. Go over whatever rules, teach people to Time Warp maybe, sacrifice the virgins, and start the fucking movie. Throw in an audience costume contest if it's a special show of some sort. Whenever I'm doing pre-show I generally try to have the movie started by 12:20. And if we got into the theatre late or there was some other delay, I'll speed it up.
