Hi all,

What must have been many years ago when I was first getting into Rocky, I must have come across this MP3 on some P2P network. I have not been able to identify the cast though.

http://www.eptheatre.org/dij.mp3 (Damn it, Janet)

It sounds like it was done some time during the 90s.

I am currently music director for a production of The Rocky Horror Show in Rhode Island, and the way this is orchestrated sounds a lot like a cross between the music Samuel French sends (a la, the 98-99 South African Recording) and the movie, which is essentially the sound I'm looking for.

Any insight as to what recording this is? I have been through many and I haven't figured out what it is.

Thanks,

Alex

I may be going out on a limb here, but that link does have information for their Rocky Horror Show production. I believe that is just a recording from their own stage show.

Not sure if this is the information you're requesting.

He just chunked the MP3 on his theater's web site so we could listen to it. It's not his recording.

Correct. It's from the 1990 London Cast ("The Whole Gory Story"). Here's my old page on it, since I've been remiss about adding albums to the new site: http://www.rockymusic.org/OLD/cds/london-90/. It's still in print, in the U.K. at least: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rocky-Horror-Show-Various-Artists/dp/B000026HFU/.

The orchestrations and even the script were completely redone for this cast, as I recall. Michael White held the rights to The Rocky Horror Show through at least the mid 80s. It was kind of dying out though, so he sold the rights back to Richard O'Brien, Christopher Malcolm, et al. ("The Rocky Horror Company, Ltd"). The 1990 London Cast was their first production, was terribly popular, and revitalized audiences for the stage show in the U.K. and Europe. I believe Michael White has said in more recent interviews that selling the rights back for The Rocky Horror Show was one of the worst business decisions he's ever made.

P.S. The above is talking about the rights to the stage play outside of North America, where they still only allow professional productions. The rights are handled completely differently in North America through Samuel French, and amateur productions have been allowed here since the Broadway revival in 2001.

Thanks so much for the quick response. Time to track down that CD!

I'll just note publicly that it really sucks that I have to go through hoops to get the show to sound good with the materials French sent. Would you believe that the score includes NO VOCAL PARTS for the phantoms? I find it amusing that nowhere in Over at the Frankenstein Place does the score contain those words.

Do you have any idea how these orchestrations came about? The script is copyright 1983--I'm assuming this mess started back then?

Hey AlexBT,

Here's something I just cam across on E-Bay spain that you might be interested in.

The songbook is pretty common. However, this is the first time I've seen the songbook offered with a CD of backing tracks.
