I think it's generally agreed that the Roxy Cast recording, is the best to listen to. It's not my favourite, but it does have the best voices and most complex musical arrangements.
One thing, that most people, don't seem to understand, is that it isn't a reproduction of the show that actually played at The Roxy.
It was designed to be appealing to those who hadn't seen the show. The Roxy used the original musical arrangements that London and Australia used, as can be heard on those albums. The Roxy recording brought in the best musicians in Lou Adler's stable, brass, and overtracking, to produce a much bigger sound, that never appeared in any theatre. Tempos and style are played with, and all of the brass added. It's a fantastic recording, but it isn't what audiences heard in real life.
The dreadful 1992 Australian Cast CD is the same, in that it's arrangements are only on a recording, and weren't used in the theatre, the original arrangements played live.
