I just posted these sound files, courtesy of an anonymous fan in Australia who discovered a live tape recording he had made over three decades ago:

http://www.rockymusic.org/mp3scat/rhs-austr75live/

A friend of his was able to clean up the recording a bit and burn it to CD form, which he was nice enough to share with me. The sound files are from a 1975 audience recording of the final Sydney performance of The Rocky Horror Show in its original Australian run, just before the transfer to Melbourne. The cast list is as follows:

  • Usherette/Magenta: Robyn Moase
  • Brad: Gregory Apps
  • Janet: Paula Maxwell
  • Narrator: Tommy Dysart
  • Riff Raff: Sal Sarah
  • Columbia: Gillian Jones
  • Frank: Andrew Sharpe
  • Rocky: Robert Forza
  • Eddie/Dr Scott: Terry Bader

Sal Sharah is the only member of the original cast to still be performing in this recording (you can also hear him on the 1974 cast album as well as the later 1978 New Zealand cast album). You may also recognize the Magenta/Usherette, Robyn Moase, who was later featured as Deadpan Dolores in Richard O'Brien's 1982 musical The Stripper (also produced in Sydney). A bonus track from the matinee performance features well known Frank-N-Furter Max Phipps performing Sweet Transvestite. The sound quality is quite decent overall, and it's very nice to hear audience reactions and such from a time when audience participation wasn't the ritualized institution that it is today. Enjoy!

Yeah, he mentioned that he wished he had recorded the whole show also. He said that he thinks he was worried about having to change the tape while the show was going on, so just the songs were recorded. Apparently he has another tape of the matinee performance though that's mostly dialogue with just a few of the songs (like the Max Phipps Sweet T already posted). Speaking of Max Phipps, I didn't realize that he had roles in both The Return of Captain Invincible and The Road Warrior.

It's truly cool being able to hear stuff like this, especially when it's such great quality. The arrangements are much better and more interesting than the official '74 album, and the cast do a better job!
I didn't hear any audience reactions except for laughing.
Did the guy who recorded it give the date and venue?

Hi (re: when was it recorded), I can't remember the actual date in 1975 but I think it was in October. It was recorded at the New Art Cinema, Glebe (later became the Vahalla, now destined to become an office block!)

Glad you enjoyed it!
