This is the RHPS FAQ, to be used on alt.cult-movies.rocky-horror,
alt.cult-movies, and elsewhere. It will be posted on or about the last day of
every month to alt.cult-movies.rocky-horror and alt.cult-movies. I'm just a
poor schmuck who thought it would be fun to do this, so if there's an error that
you notice somewhere, don't get all upset - just e-mail me about it. Please
keep in mind that this is all in good clean (?) fun.

Also, I'm always open to suggestions, changes, or new ideas, so if you think of
something that you feel should be in the FAQ, don't be afraid to let me know.
And remember: Always practice Safe FAQing.

Section 0 - How to use this FAQ

...............................................................................

0a. - How can I quickly find what I want?

Sections are divided by lines of ===, and subsections are divided by lines of
---, so to quickly jump to the next section or subsection, use the feature of
your text editor to find the next === or ---.

While reading the table of contents, if you want to jump to a particular
subsection, do the same with your editor, but search for the number-letter
combination of the subsection.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

0b. - How are the version numbers determined?

Slight changes or rewordings of subsections increase the letter value
(ie - v1.0a to v1.0b)

Major reworkings of a subsection (or addition or removal of a subsection)
increase the decimal value (ie - v1.0 to v1.1)

Major reworkings of a section (or addition or removal of a section) increase
the number value (ie - v1.0 to v2.0)

Any changes made to the decimal will reset the letter value, and any changes to
the number will reset both the decimal and the letter. For example, a
reworking of a subsection in version 1.0b would create version 1.1 (not 1.1b).
A reworking of a section in version 1.3f would create version 2.0 (not 2.3f,
2.3, or 2.0f).

Please note, however, that periodically I may just increase the version number
for the hell of it. It's my FAQ, dammit - I'll do what I want with it.

Rarely Humorous Pointless Satire
Really Hideous Penguin Sundaes
Really Horny Purple Salamanders
Really Horrible People Shouting
Regrettably, Hinwood's Performance Stinks

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1b. - What does RHPS *REALLY* mean?

The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It's a movie.
Check out what newsgroup you're in.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1c. - What does FAQ mean?

Frequently Asked Questions. This is the RHPS FAQ, or the Rocky Horror Picture
Show Freqently Asked Questions. They're the questions that are most frequently
asked about The Rocky Horror Picture Show. If a question is asked frequently
about The Rocky Horror Picture Show, it would be in here. Likewise, if The
Rocky Horror Picture Show had questions frequently asked about it, they would
be in here. As would frequently asked questions about The Rocky Horror Picture
Show.

Frequently asked questions about Chia Pets would not be in here, nor
would questions asked frequently about J.R. "Bob" Dobbs. Questions that are
frequently asked about gerbils would not be in here, and neither would
questions frequently asked about the ramifications of the United States'
intervention on the political, social, and economical structure of the Middle
East. This is the RHPS FAQ.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1d. - How can *I* see RHPS?

Well, there are seven main ways:
  (a) Rent it at your local video store
  (b) Buy it at your local video store (or mail-order)
  (c) Steal it from your local video store
  (d) Borrow it from your local library
  (e) Rent/Buy/Steal/Borrow the film and get a projector
  (f) Watch it on television (US, UK, and Canada)
  (g) Go to a movie theatre. Dammit.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1e. - What theatres show RHPS?

Lots of 'em - usually the most trashy looking ones in town.

Most major cities have shows on a regular basis, and others have special
showings throughout the year. Most college campuses will have special showings
throughout the year as well (usually during Halloween and at the end of a
term).

A constantly updating theatre list is posted on the 15th of every month to
alt.cult-movies.rocky-horror, alt.answers, and news.answers.
It is archived at rtfm.mit.edu (and its mirrors) in the directory
/pub/usenet/news.answers/movies/rocky-horror-theaters.

For an e-mail copy of the theatre list at any time, send an e-mail request to:
bc770@cleveland.Freenet.Edu

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1f. - What's the easiest way to find out where RHPS is playing in my area?

There're a few ways of doin' that, too:
  (a) Become a memeber of the Fan Club and ask Sal Piro for a list
  (b) Check the list posted every month on alt.cult-movies.rocky-horror
  (c) Call a random theatre in your city and ask them if they know
  (d) Look in a newspaper for theatre listings
  (e) Just drive around aimlessly, periodically asking pedestrians if they know

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1g. - What do I do after the movie?

Many casts have cast parties, especially after "special" shows (ie Halloween,
end-of-term, etc), and they usually don't mind adoring slobbering fans tagging
along. Expect to find anything and everything you could possibly imagine to
please you at these parties.

Most people, though, either can't afford to party like this after every show
(finantially and/or physically), so they usually take a trip to your friendly
24-hour dining establishments (Denny's, Big Boy, truck stops, etc). If you
need something to do while at one of these fine restaurants, we have a few
suggestions...

1001 (or so) Ways to get Kicked Out of 24-Hour Diners:

1-Enter in full RHPS costume and commence a floor show.
2-Steal all the flowers from the tables.
3-Eat all the flowers on the tables.
4-Stuff all the flowers on the tables down one girl's cleavage.
5-Do sugar shots (swallow packets of sugar - the sugar, not the paper)
 6-Do half-and-half shots
7-Get sick doing Sweet and Low shots.
8-Suck on ketchup bottles (deep throat contests are sooo entertaining.,.)
9-Make a production out of popping 'virgin' ketchup bottles.
10-Using a fork as a lever, fling sugar packets across the room.
11-Using a fork as a lever, fling jelly across the room
12-Fling jelly at the mirrored ceiling until it sticks. Wonder who it will fall
on.
13-Fling cream cheese at the mirrored ceiling and discover it sticks better
than jelly.
14-Tell the waitress dirty jokes.
15-Set a book of matches on fire in the ashtray.
16-Smoke a clove cigarette. When the waitress comes to take your order act
stoned.
17-Steal forkes.
18-Steal forks, make them into bracelets and walk out wearing them.
19-Steal wine lists.
20-Steal menus.
21-Steal the tacky plastic plants.
22-Plant marijuana seeds in the real plant pots. Return in a month.
23-Make the "normal people" the waitress mistakenly seated in your section feel
welcome.
24-When the "normals" leave, eat their leftover food.
25-Order "just water". When the waitress informs you of the $2.50 minimum,
rifle through your pockets. Unearthing a dollar, order a vanilla coke. Change
it to a strawberry sprite. Change it to a chocolate root beer. Ask if they have
any other flavourings. When the waitress asks what else you'd like, smile and
say "That's it." When she reminds you of the $2.50 minimum, split french friens
with mozzerella cheese and tomato sauce with your friend across the room.
Change tables to sit with him. Ask the waitress to put you on that table's
bill. Do not leave a tip.
26-Order pickles, hot dogs, bananas, tacos, etc. and eat them suggestively.
27-Take up the whole No Smoking section and all light up. Tell the waitress you
thought it was the Chain Smoking Section.
28-Convince the waitress that she's dead and the diner is her own personal
hell.
29-Convince the waitress that *you've* died and the diner is *your* own
personal hell.
30-Bring your own food. (water, cake, etc)
31-Blow kisses at employees.
32-Blow kisses at "normals"
33-Blow kisses at employees of the same sex.
34-Blow kisses at "normals" of the same sex.
35-Ask to meet the meat.
36-Ask what breed of hamburger they serve.
37-Do imitations of the employees.
38-Have a management look-alike contest.
39-Freak out over an invisible cockroach.
40-Perform a Satanic ritual using the main course as the sacrifice.
41-Goose the waiter/waitress
42-Hold a descriptive conversation about your last bowel movement while the
waitress is trying to take your order.
43-Casually plan a murder while the waitress is taking orders from your table.
44-Plan the murder of the waitress.
45-Decide that it's a nearby normal's birthday. Have the waitress sing to
him/her.
46-Each time the waitress leaves the room, switch places/tables.
47-Ask for seperate checks for each person.
48-Order for your invisible friend. When you leave, stick him with the check.
49-Order all your food to go. Eat it in the parking lot.
50-Have a contest to see who can fake the best orgasm.

Section 2 - A bit of history and changes

...............................................................................

2a. - How did RHPS start?

The movie was originally a play, written by Richard O'Brien, with the working
title "They Came from Denton High." It was changed to "The Rocky Hor-Roar
Show", and eventually to "The Rocky Horror Show". It premiered on June 16,
1973, at The Royal Court Theatre Upstairs in London, England. After a short
while, it was moved from the 60-seat Upstairs theatre to a converted movie
house, and then to the King's Road Theatre, which seats 500. It was named
best musical of 1973 by the British drama critics.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2b. - Where did it go from there?

After about ten months, Lou Adler (the owner at the time of the Roxy theatre
in Los Angeles, California, USA) saw the musical and brought it to The United
States - at the Roxy. A bit after that, in 1975, it was made into the movie.
As a promotion for the movie, it also had a (disasterous) run on Broadway.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2f. - What changes to the songs were made for the movie?

OVER AT THE FRANKENSTEIN PLACE:

In "Over at the Frankenstein Place", Brad should have a verse all to
himself - it was never filmed. It goes a little something like this:

BRAD:   I can see the flag fly, I can see the rain;
Just the same, there has got to be
Something better here for you and me.

SWORD OF DAMOCLES:

"Sword of Damocles" had a few extra lines from the narrator/criminologist that
were never filmed. They are:

(Before Rocky's third verse)

NARR: Rocky Horror, you need peace of mind,
I want to tell you that you're doing fine.
You're the product of another time,
So feeling low? Well, that's no crime.

CHARLES ATLAS SONG/I CAN MAKE YOU A MAN:

The words for "Charles Atlas Song/I Can Make You A Man" had significant changes
made from the stage to the screen. The stage version is written out, with
movie changes in parenthasis.

FRANK: A weakling, weighing ninety-eight pounds,
Got sand in his face when kicked to the ground.
        (Will get sand...)

His girl split on him, and then, in the gym,
(And soon in the gym, with a determined chin,)
The sweat from his pores as he worked for his cause
                                  (... works...)

Made him glisten and gleam; he was thin, but quite clean.
(Will make him...) (he'll be pink, and quite clean.)
He was in good shape, but the wrong shape.
(He'll be a strong man, but the wrong man.)

He ate nutritious, high protien, and swallowed raw eggs.
        (He'll eat nutritious...) (... swallow...)
Tried to build up his shoulders, his chest, arms, and legs.
        (Try to...)

Then a magazine advert with a new muscle plan
(Such an effort, if he only knew of my plan,)
Said in just seven days, I can make you a man.
        (In just seven...)

He'd done press-ups, and chin-ups, cleaned and jerked, done the snatch.
(He'll do press-ups, and chin-ups, do the snatch, clean, and jerk.)
Thought dynamic tension just must be a catch.
(He thinks dynamic tension must be hard work)

So he re-read the advert to see how it ran,
(Such strenuous living, I just don't understand,)
It said in just seven days, I can make you a man.
        (In just seven...)

ONCE IN A WHILE:

After Janet sings "Toucha, Toucha, Touch Me", Brad should have a song called
"Once in a While" - it was filmed but left out of the movie.

BRAD: Once in a while, she don't want to call you,
        Speaking on the telephone.
        And once in your life, she won't want to know you;
You look around, the one you've found, she is gone.

And that's all the time that it takes
        For a heart to turn to stone;
The sweeter the wine, the harder to make the break,
You hear something about someone you thought you'd known.

So baby, don't cry like there's no tomorrow,
        After the night, there's a brand new day;
And there'll be no pain, and no more sorrow,
So wash your face and phone my place, it'll be okay.

And that's all the time that it takes
        For a heart to beat again;
So give me a sign that a lover makes,
You look around, the one you've found is back again.

SUPERHEROES:

The last song (aside from the closing credits) is "Superheroes." Brad and
Janet have verses in it that were used in the original version of the movie,
but have been left out of some later versions (see Section 2g.).
The song goes like this:

(Scene: The castle has just taken off)

BRAD: (sung) I've done a lot, God knows I've tried
To find the truth; I've even lied.
But all I know is down inside I'm
        Bleeding.

JANET: (sung) And Super Heroes come to feast,
To taste the flesh not yet deceased.
And all I know is still the beast is
        Feeding.

BACK: (lots of ooo-oooh's and aaa-aaah's)

CRIM: (spoken) And crawling on the planet's face,
Some insects called the human race.
Lost in time, and lost in space.
        And meaning.

BACK: (sung) Meaning.

(Note: this last verse by the Criminologist is in all versions)

SCIENCE FICTION/DOUBLE FEATURE (REPRISE):

This song was cut from some versions of the movie (see Section 2g.). It plays
over the closing credits.

RICHARD: Science fiction, double feature,
        Frank has built and lost his creature;
Darkness has conquered Brad and Janet,
The servants gone to a distant planet.

        Oh, oh, oh, oh,
        At the late night double feature picture show;
I want to go - oh, oh,
To the late night double feature picture show.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2g. - What different versions of the movie exist?

At last check, there was the original release of the film, the re-release of
the flim, the re-re-release of the film, the Japanese video (with subtitles),
the UK mono video, the UK stereo video, the US video, the US video re-release,
and the laserdisc. Whew.

>From version to version, different changes have been made to the soundtrack,
the songs "Superheroes" and "Science Fiction/Double Feature (reprise)" have
been added and removed, and, on the video and laserdisc versions, documentary
footage and a "Time Warp" video have been added sometimes. This can be quite
annoying (and expensive) for completists who want every version of everything.

Original film, re-re-release of the film, and Japanese video:
--Has original soundtrack

Rumor has it that the 20th Anniversary lasrdisc (with a possible
re-re-re-release of the video) will contain Superheroes, Science Fiction
Reprise, *and* the long-lost footage of Once In A While (see Section
2f.). However, as it's been reported that 20th Century Fox can't find
their Once In A While footage, this last bit is doubtful.

2h. - What's the difference between the stereo and mono versions of the movie?

[note: this section is far from complete. it will be complete when on-na
gets around to giving me her list. thanks to james norman for giving me
something to work off of, though]

When Fox released the movie on video, rather than working from the original
mono soundtrack, they decided to use the stereo release of the music
soundtrack and to screw with various other things along the way. This is a
partial list of the changes to the songs themselves (changes to everything
else are primarily just which speaker the sound comes out of).

DAMMIT JANET:

In the mono version, the piano is especially prevalent. In the stereo
versions, there's more of an even mix of instruments

TIME WARP:

Magenta's hissing and moaning are much more subdued in the stereo
version. Most noticeable is when Riff says "I've got to" in the first
verse.

SWEET TRANSVESTITE:

During the chorus of the stereo print, Frank's voice is predominant. In the
mono, one can hear Columbia, Magenta, and Riff more. One big difference is
during the last "Transexual, Transylvania". In the stereo, Frank's voice is
heard singing it, while in the mono, it is only Columbia, Magenta, and Riff.

HOT PATOOTIE:

The line "cosmic light came into my life, I thought I was divine,"
sounds more said than sung in the stereo version.

TOUCH-A, TOUCH-A, TOUCH ME:

This is perhaps where the changes are most noticable. The line "Now all
I want to know" echoes a bit more than it should, because both the mono
and stereo are playing at this point in order to get Magenta's laugh.
Ironically, in the stereo version you can't hear Magenta and Columbia
laugh on the last shot of them (they're laughing quite loudly in the
mono). Also, during the run of "Creatures of the Night," most of the
lips on the stereo version don't match the lines. In particular, Frank's
line is completely different, and Janet's last line doesn't match at all.

EDDIE'S TEDDY:

During the final "Eddie" the switch back to the mono from the stereo is
noticeable about 4/5 of the way through (before Riff hushes Magenta).

FLOORSHOW:

In the stereo version, when Rocky sings "Now the only thing I've come to
trust" the word 'come' is emphasized more. Also, Janet sings "landed"
differently (the lips don't match at all).

SUPERHEROES:

In some of the mono versions, the drums are much more prevalent during
Janet's verse. In most mono versions of the film, however, Brad and
Janet's verse are barely noticeable (if at all). See section 2f for more
details on this one.

Section 3 - Audience Participation

...............................................................................

3a. - What's with this audience participation I keep hearing about?

It's a main part of RHPS. The audience "calls-back" to the screen. These are
often called "call-backs" or "lines." Also, in various parts of the movie, the
audience throws things all over the place and makes a real big mess.
Lots o' fun.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3b. - What should I take to a showing of RHPS?

Yourself. Lots of friends. Lots of money to give to the cast memebers.

Many people, largely perceived to be virgins, have taken it upon themselves to
bring weird items, such as shaving cream, spaghetti, rocks, Toyota Tercels,
etc. While this may be allowed by the theatre, it will unfailingly cause the
majority of the crowd to consider you (rightly) an idiot.

Here's a semi-complete listing of the more popular items:
  Rice
  Newspaper
  Water Guns
  Lighter/Matches/Flashlight/Flame-Thrower/Whatever
  Noise Makers
  Rubber Gloves
Confetti (you can tear up the newspaper for this one)
  Toilet Paper (preferably Scott brand)
  Toast
  Bells
  Hot Dogs
  Playing Cards

It's up to you to figure out when to use these.

There's a general rule most people seem to follow: "If you are hit in the face
with a hot dog chunk, then now must be the time to throw hot dogs!"
Unfortunately, this rule doesn't work, because there are always the high school
freshman who get off from throwing anything, anytime.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3c. - What should I wear to a showing of RHPS?

Nothing - or at least as little as possible. Well, lots of black is usually
good. As is lingerie. As are fishnets. Basically, the weirder the better.
You'll feel strange leaving the house (or office), but once you get within a
hundred yards or so of the theatre, you should fit right in.

This section is, of course, for the people who are part-timers. Most veteran
Rocky-goers dress however they want to usually, and don't give a flying fuck
WHAT other people think. Societal norms are so much fun.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3d. - Should I worry that I don't know many of the call-backs at my first show?

No. This is a major misconception about RHPS. Nobody is going to think any
less of you if you just sit back and have a good time. Before you know it,
you'll know more than you ever really wanted to. Just relax and enjoy
yourself (or the people around you, if you wish).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3e. - Should I worry that I'll be embarassed at my first show?

Probably.

Most places have something called a "virgin sacrifice." (A virgin is someone
who has never seen the show before. If you've seen it on video, that doesn't
count; that just makes you a video slut - you're still a virgin.) The
sacrifice can be something as tame as singing to the virgins to something as
raunchy as... well, let your mind wander. The majority of them are just in
good fun and aren't out to really hurt anyone. The cast wants you to return
for more and more showings - they're not going to piss you off so that you
never go back. You can try to hide, but if anyone at all in the theatre knows
you, they will betray you. Count on it. Don't worry about it and let them
have their fun. Just close your eyes and think of England.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3f. - Should I locate an audience participation script and memorize it?

A resounding NO!

You could, but you'd be really lame if you did, tho'. Just go and listen.
Most people start picking up on a lot of them by their third show, and they
start making their own up a few shows later. The scripts are made so that the
veterans can exchange lines from different cities and to find out who says
what, etc. Most of the more popular ones in circulation are pretty lame
themselves, anyway.

Section 4 - RHPS Errors and Trivia

...............................................................................

4a. - Errors in editing & accuracy, and various trivia

Oh, there are so many! Here's a chronological list of a few of them:

--The lips in the opening credits are Magenta's
--Many of the wedding guests are also Transylvanians
--One guest (a brunette woman) runs up to be in the wedding picture twice
--The bride's father (bald, white tuxedo) walks up the stairs twice
--The priest at the church is Dr. Frank-N-Furter
--The workers at the church are Riff Raff, Magenta, and Columbia
--On the video, the boom (microphone) can be seen during parts of the wedding
scene
--The Denton billboard in the cemetary could be considered an ad for a
Television station (see Shock Treatment)
--The chalk heart that Brad draws on the church changes shape in different
shots
--Janet's purse in Dammit, Janet is on the ground behind her in one shot and in
front of her in another
--The Criminoligist claims that it is a "late November evening" yet Nixon's
resignation speech is playing on the car radio (he resigned in August)
--The copy of the Plain Dealer that Janet has is not the one from the day of
Nixon's resignation (it could be from a late November evening, tho')
--The grandfather clock reads 12 o'clock, but rings 7 times before Time Warp,
and 10 times after
--The Transylvanian with the tray of hour d'ourves puts it down and in a
different shot suddenly has it again
--Columbia's hat can be seen on the ground right before her tap-dance, but when
she starts dancing it's on her head
--Janet is still screaming after she faints before Sweet Transvestite
--The amazing buttoning-unbuttoning shirt that Brad has on while Magetna is
stripping him
--The position of Rocky's arms and the types of moves he's doing change in
different shots during Charle's Atlas Song
--Eddie's bracers disappear at one stage while rolling around on the floor with
Columbia
--The "LOVE" and "HATE" tattoos on Eddie's fingers were adapted from a Robert
Mitchum film called "The Night of the Hunter"
--There is blood on the freezer floor before Frank hits Eddie with the pick
--While he's activating the magnet, Frank starts to raise his left leg, but
when the camera shot changes, his right leg is lifted
--The first shot of Dr. Scott going up the stairs has a piece of carpet turned
over by the wire pulling the wheelchair
--The first shot of Dr. Scott going up the stairs was supposed to be edited
out, but never was (or so rumour has it)
--While Rocky is proposing a toast to Janet, Riff's hand can be seen pulling
the napkin out of Dr. Scott's glass - and he does it AGAIN a few moments later
--Riff serves Brad a slice of meat in a close-up of Brad, and then again in a
wide shot
--In Planet Schmanet, Janet, Frank pulls down Janet's bra strap, but it's back
in place in the next shot
--The tattoo on Frank's arm is washed off in the pool during the floor show,
reappears for the last bit of the floor show, is washed off again at the end of
the floor show, and is on again at the end of I'm Going Home
--The last few seconds in the "flashback" of Riff's and Magenta's never appears
elsewhere in the film from that camera angle
--Brad and Janet are helping Dr. Scott out of the castle without a wheelchair,
but Dr. Scott is laying on a broken wheelchair during Superheroes

There are plenty more, too. Keep your eyes peeled.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4b. - Shock Treatment Trivia

NOTE: For more info on what Shock Treatment is, check Section 6e.

--Betty Hapschatt's TV show (The Denton Dossier) is the same name as the
Criminologist's file on Brad and Janet in RHPS
--Cosmo and Nation are rumoured to be Riff and Magenta hiding out because the
computer information on them has no listing for their origin, Betty said that
they had a popular series in England (RHS?), they're siblings/lovers, and in
the old series, they didn't have a convertable.
--Judge Oliver Wright (played by Charles Gray) could well be our nameless and
neckless Criminologist, having received a promotion for his painstaking
investigation of The Denton Affair.
--Sal Piro has a cameo - he's talking on a telephone in the opening sequence,
and he's wearing a really disgusting plaid suit.
--Many of the costumes/props from RHPS are in the wardrobe room
--It's rumoured that all of the Transylvanians are audience members, and that
they're the one wearing sunglasses, but so far I haven't been able to find a
Transylvanian in RHPS that looks like John Candy.
--The original shooting script for "The Brad and Janet Show" (Shock
Treatement's original title) lacked the character of Bert Schnick.
--Christopher Malcolm (the origial Brad on the London stage) has a substatial
role as security guard Vance Parker
--Barry Humphries (Bert Schnick) is most famous for playing Dame Edna, the
cross-dressing talk show host who has appeared on a number of American TV
special for NBC, and is supposed to be very popular in the UK
--Barry Bostwick had other filming commitments, and couldn't appear in the
movie
--Susan Sarandon demanded one million dollars to reprise the role of Janet,
which was more than the film's budget could withstand
--Tim Curry was offerend the dual role of Brad and Farley, but turned it down
because he didn't think he could handle the American accent
--The idea to have ST take place totally within a soundstage was conceived by
Jim Sharman after $5 million suddenly became unavailable due to the 1979-80
Screen Actors' Guild strike. The original plan was to have the film shot at
natural locations
--The number 4711 appears on a computer screen when Betty is doing some
research
--The character Francine demands to be called Frankie
--The Transylvanian thunderbolt is on the wall in the room where the cast
performs "Little Black Dress" (next to a warning "High Voltage")

[anything else?]

4c. - The Rocky Pledge

GENERAL PLEDGE:

I, State Your Name,
Pledge allegiance to the lips
Of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
And to the decadance for which it stands,
One movie, under Richard O'Brien,
With Sensuous Daydreams, Erotic Nightmares, and Sins of the Flesh for All!
And I promise to be creative and not repeat anything anyone else says.

(this makes a bit more sense for Rocky fans in the US)

RICHARD O'BRIEN'S TRANSYLVANIAN PLEDGE:

We swear, often and loudly, to strike a blow for glamour and frivolty,
for rock-n-roll, for six-inch heels, for interplanetary intercourse, and
for teh Transylvanian Way.

4d. - The RHPS Trivia Quiz

Well, this section has been under construction for about forever, and somoene
who has helped out in the past was kind enough to email me a short quiz, and so
I figured this would do. An "official" quiz of sorts, by Mike Hess and other

4e. - Answers to The RHPS Trivia Quiz

Yeah, right... like I'm just gonna GIVE you the answers. Figure them out for
yourself! Sheesh... some people...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4f. - Stories, Weirdness, and Stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else

[Note: This section needs much improving! If you have any interesting/amusing
stories, anectdotes, trivia, or anything about or related to RHPS, please
e-mail me (japfaff@miavx1.acs.muohio.edu). Thanks.]

--The Denton Hotline (coproduced by Sal Piro and the cast of Midnight
Insanity) is available at 900.868.1010 (ext 484). $2.00 per minute, 3
minute maximum.

--While RHPS was being filmed, Brian Thompson, set designer, noticed that the
set crew forgot to build a door for Dr. Scott's entrance. When it came time to
film his entrance, Richard asked Brian how Dr. Scott was going to enter.
Brian answered, "We'll just push him through the wall."

--Susan Sarandon was asked to do a nude scene, but declined. Interestingly
enough, she had done nude scenes before, and became quite well-known for doing
nude scenes after Rocky.

--There is much controversy as to what Frank actually says right before
Columbia and Magenta throw the sheet off of the tank. The two most popular
suggestions are "Up now!" and "Hooplah!" I personally have always thought it
to be "Hooplah", but that's just me.

--A "debate" that pops up on the newsgroup from time to time is which theatre
has had the longest continuing run of RHPS. The answer (to my knowledge) is
The Graceland Theater in Columbus, OH, USA, which has been showing it since
October, 1976. However, as of right now, Graceland will be closing its
doors to RHPS soon, so whoever is currently in second place will move up
to first (I have no idea who that might be).

--Some people may be wondering about the person who is Perry Bedden. Perry was
a transylvanian in RHPS, and he was the tall and cute photographer's assistant
in the opening wedding sequence. In Shock Treatment, he was one of Neely's
cameramen. The person who really knows all about Perry is On-na, and if she
would care to spiff up the story about him, I wouldn't mind a bit. For info on
how to join the Perry Bedden Fan Club, see Section 5a.

--The ex Prime Minister of New Zealand performed as the Narrator for one night
in the late 1980's.

--(taken word-for-word from a bio of Jim Sharman) O'Brien originally conceived
the film [Shock Treatment] as a very direct sequel, in which Janet seeks Dr.
Scott's help because Brad has turned gay after his night with Fran N. Furter.
Rocky was not killed, having the same immortality as Frankenstein's Monster,
and he too seeks out Dr. Scott to try and resurrect Frank.l They succeed, and
Frank was to sing "Little Black Dress" in indicate what to wear to one's
resurrection.

--(taken from the book "Midnight Movies") The sequel began with Rocky Horror
scrambling out of the grave of the crater left by the house taking off,
dragging the body of Frank across some hills to a house which Dr. Scott had
taken to look at the ashes, sort of check out the ashes. Brad had broken up
with Janet and went to live with Dr. Scott. After Rocky, with Frank's boy,
breaks through a window in Scott's house and asks the good doctor to bring
Frank back to life, they all repair to Denton, where Janet is having Frank's
baby. A big party is held toelebrate the "song of Frank," but Riff Raff and
Magenta, disguised as hospital orderlies, steal the baby, go off in an
ambulance and off into the future.

5b. - What Newsletters and Fanzines have existed throughout the years?

Most casts have their own versions of newletters, fanzines, programs, et
cetera, and it is near impossible to keep track of them all. These, however,
are often times more interesting than the fanzines aimed towards wide-spread
consumption, because they are usually shorter, aren't filled with information
you already know, and have a local flair to them. Many people collect this
sort of thing, so your best bet would be to just ask around. Also, whenever
you see the show in a new place, ask the cast if they have a mailing list or a
semi-regular newsletter. They should be more than happy to have an additional
subscriber.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5c. - What Newsletters and Fanzines exist now?

The RHPS e-mailing list - send email to mossap@essex.ac.uk

For general newsletter trading, etc., send email to laramary@eden.rutgers.edu

Most of the fan clubs in section 5a. have newsletters and/or fanzines
associated with them. Send an SASE (or internat'l reply coupon) for info to
the fan club(s) of your choice.

5d. - What books exist?

--Creatures of the Night - Sal Piro
--Richard O'Brien's The Rocky Horror Show (songbook) - Richard O'Brien

6a. - What movies have had references to RHPS?

--Vampyres: Daughters of Dracula - not really a reference, but they use the
same castle as was used in RHPS (Vampyres was first, though)
--Fame - a few of the characters go to see Sal Piro and RHPS in New York
--Jubilee - both Richard O'Brien and Nell Campbell starred in this movie, so
references are plentiful
--Lizstomania - features Nell Campbell and the throne from RHPS
--Willie and Phil - at the end, they pass people lined up for RHPS
--Blue Money - there's a 'come as your favorite movie star' party.
Someone attends as Franks-N-Furter (ironically, Tim Curry stars in this
movie, but attends as Fred Astaire)
--Pulp Fiction - there is reference to the character "Johnny Rocky Horror"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6b. - What television shows have had references to RHPS?

--Fridays - The Ronnie Horror Picture Show
--Real People - did a segment
--Sesame Street - Susan Sarandon appeared as Janet with the Count
--You Can't do that on Television - was featured in a show about addictions
--MTV Rocky Horror 1990 Special (The Big Picture) - Costume contests and the
like
--Charles in Charge - Charles and the kids are planning to go to the 15th
Anniversary convention, but Charles gets locked in a monkey cage all night.
It's worth it just to see the Adam dressed as Riff, Jamie as Magenta, and Sarah
as Brad.
--Head of the Class - mentioned in passing
--Cagney and Lacey - they pass two young girls in full RHS regaila, who
were arrested under suspicion of being prostitutes, when they were just
on their way to the theatre

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--The Rocky Horror Muppet Show - done at an SF con (19xx?)
--The Rocky Porno Video Show - available for rent at your better video stores

Text parodies/crossovers:

  (email requests to willie@apanga.org.au)
--The Spocky Horror Star Trek Show (with audience participation) - by Tim Murphy
  (email: ac184@freenet.carleton.ca)
--Transvestites and Relative Dimensions in Space (Dr Who/RHPS)
  (email requests to willie@apanga.org.au)
--The Rocky and Bullwinkle Horror Picture Show - by Joe Blevins

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6d. - Is there a sequel to RHPS?

No.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6e. - What about Shock Treatment?

It's not a sequel, not a prequel. It's just another movie. Granted, it
happens after RHPS happens (we assume), but it's no more a sequel to RHPS than
Silence of the Lambs is a sequel to Manhunter (ask the folks on a.c-m for that
one).

Whereas RHPS is a satire of the B-movies, Shock Treatment is a satire of
television and game shows. The town of Denton has become one big television
studio, and Brad and Janet get swept away in it. I won't give too much of the
plot away, because it is actually a good movie if you watch it a few times.
Some songs to be on the lookout for include "Bitchin' in the Kitchen", "Little
Black Dress", and "Duel Duet". Richard O'Brien and Patricia Quinn return as
Cosmo and Nation McKinley. (Little) Nell Campell is Nurse Ansalong. Charles
Gray is Judge Oliver Wright. Brad and Janet are played by two new people.
They sing better than Barry and Susan, but Janet can't lipsync for anything.
A complete listing of cast members is as such:

Dr. Cosmo McKinley - Richard O'Brien
Dr. Nation McKinley - Patricia Quinn
Farly Flavors - Cliff DeYoung
Brad Majors - Cliff DeYoung
Janet Majors - Jessica Harper
Nurse Ansalong - (Little) Nell Campbell
Betty Hapschatt - Ruby Wax
Bert Schnick - Barry Humphries
Judge Oliver Wright - Charles Gray
"Rest Home" Ricky - Rik Mayall

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6f. - What about Revenge of the Old Queen?

Like that's ever going to happen. Richard O'Brien has been working on that
movie (the OFFICIAL sequel) for years now, and it shows no signs of ever being
made. Look for it at about the same time Hell freezes over.
For those truly interested, tho', new songs will include "Short End of the
Stick", "Gentleman Caller", and "Never Let Your Daughter Date an Alien". New
characters are Lord DeLordy and Ray Ammbo. Richard O'Brien will continue
playing Riff Raff.

Most of the original actors from RHPS either do not want to be in it or are
hesitant (including Patricia Quinn, which is odd because she's stuck by our boy
Richard through most of his work (Disaster, Shock Treatment, etc)).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6g. - What about various sequels that have been written by fans?

--Frankie Comes Again - by Donny O'Bryan - written for the Inside Insanity
newsletter, transcribed for net-land by
CGLADISH@VAX1.UMKC.EDU (as of yet, I'm not sure if he is willing to mail
out copies, so be polite with your requests!)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6h. - Anything else?

--The Rocky Horror Picture Show Computer Game - released by Activision in 1985.
Players assume the role of Brad or Janet and roam around the Frankenstein Place
trying to find pieces of a machine to save the character not being played. It
has a rockin' computerized version of Time Warp as background music. You only
get one "life" and it's easy to "die", so the game can get a bit monotonous and
frustrating at times. Worth picking up, tho'.

--There are rumors about a pinball game in the making. Keep a lookout on
rec.games.pinball for occasional updates

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6i. - Where can I see The Rocky Horror Show (the musical play)?

I want to have as many links as possible on it. Thanks.
