The Rocky Horror Show had its humble beginnings at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs, a tiny 60-seat venue in London. The show had previews on June 16th and 18th, 1973, officially opened on June 19th, 1973, and closed July 20th, 1973. After that very successful four weeks, the show transferred to the larger Chelsea Classic Cinema and then other locations for an initial run of 2,960 performances in London. It finally closed at the 820-seat Comedy Theatre in London's West End on September 13th, 1980. The play was named Best Musical of 1973 in the London Evening Standard's annual poll of drama critics. Many members of the original London cast would go on to also be involved in its film adaptation, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and to this day The Rocky Horror Company continues to mount regular touring productions of The Rocky Horror Show throughout the U.K. and Europe.
