Shock Treatment (1981) is Richard O'Brien's "Not a prequel, not a sequel, but an equal" follow-up to The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It began development in 1978 as an actual sequel titled "Rocky Horror Shows His Heels", but due to a combination of factors was rewritten as The Brad and Janet Show. This was intended to be filmed on location in Denton, Texas, but as a result of the 1980 Screen Actors Guild strike filming had to be moved to a sound stage in England. The script was rewritten once again so that the whole production would take place entirely within a TV studio.
Reaction to Shock Treatment's initial release was not positive, as most Rocky Horror Picture Show fans were expecting... something else. Additionally, it was discovered that the whole audience participation phenomenon could not be forcefully replicated with a new movie. Shock Treatment's connection with The Rocky Horror Picture Show lies primarily in the fact that the same creative team was behind both films. Additionally, several actors and actresses appear in both movies - most in different roles although Jeremy Newson plays Ralph Hapschatt in both.
