Dimming the Light

The turmoil of my country's state of affairs is disturbing to say the least. This image can be interpreted a couple of ways; as "dimming the light of reason" when the United States declared they would move to go to war against Iraq alone (without United Nations support), or "dimming the light of prosperity" with the recent efforts to slow down the inevitable market crash. Either way, stupidity and tempers have run unchecked and we're in for a bumpy ride for the next half of a decade.  Don't count me as unpatriotic, I do love the United States, but just like a marriage, you take it for better and for worse, richer or poorer... until death do us part.

This is a "tame" version of my first concept drawing of this particular American flag. It was much more openly negative, and it involved the white stripes evolving into skulls, bones, discarded stock tickers in the foreground, the red stripes blood, and finally the blue around the stars would be wide open blue eyes in total disbelief after having such a safe and prosperous 1990's. But I had too hard of a time pulling that off the way I envisioned it... maybe later we'll see that version.

Created start to finish on the computer with the exception of a concept sketch done the week of September 11, 2002. Final image as you see above October 4, 2002.
