Simple Curry

After recently viewing Paul Driessen's marvelous work on the Beatles's "Yellow Submarine" feature, I had the idea that British actor, Tim Curry, would look marvelous drawn in that same simplistic style. The first version of this piece was painfully symmetrical, just as Mr. Curry's "camera face" usually is. I found this quite contradictory to the way I saw his personality and couldn't bear to create a image of him this way. Instead, I wanted it to show that there is a simple and beautiful imbalance in his character (one closed eye, one tilted hand w/rose, and unevenly trimmed beard). Then he manages to attack the things he does with dead-on determination (head not tilted, and gaze is straight ahead), and continues to maintain a reserved/private personal life (hand held up as if to gently say, "Please stop, go no further.") So there you have it, "Simple Curry" may not be so simple after all. Original concept drawing done in pencil and colorized in the computer. October 26, 1998.
